TURTLE HATCHERIES / TURTLE FARMS are doing an important job to protect the sea turtles in Sri Lanka.
They protect turtle eggs and increase hatching rates. Some hatcheries also treat injured and disabled Turtles (hurt by fishing boats, fishing net or garbage in the sea). Their staff patrols the beach all night looking for mother sea turtles that come out of the ocean to lay their eggs. Then protect the mother turtle during the nesting process and when she is finished laying the eggs and safely back in the ocean, they relocate the eggs from the beach to their hatchery. When the baby sea turtles hatch they want to return them to their natural habitat quickly. Some hatcheries also pay locals tobring eggs to the center (in stead of selling to the illegal market)
You can join in their effort to save these endangered creatures. They welcome local and international visitors to share the experience of the baby sea turtle release or see the process in action for education and awareness of sea turtle issues.
